A Community Meal

We’re bucking tradition and trying something new this year at Imago during Lent.  Every Wednesday evening at 5:30, we’re having a community meal.  $5 gets you soup and bread (catered from Water Street Cafe).  Here are some of the things I love about the meal.

  • Random groupings of people.  I had to miss one of the weeks, but for the two weeks that I’ve been there, I’ve looked around the room and thought, “where else would this group of people all sit down around a table and eat dinner?”  I think it’s a beautiful picture of what the church really is.
  • You find out things about people that you would NEVER find out just by talking briefly on Sunday mornings.  Like the fact that one woman – who will remain nameless – is little bit nuts-o about Miley Cyrus – and she’s older than 26!  You know who you are!
  • In the book of Acts we find that the first church gathered daily in the temple courts.  Church is weird today in that most of us only see each other once a week.  As a pastor, I always have a couple meetings with people during the week.  The community meal gives me a good excuse to see people more often than once a week — and being a social animal, I love it.  I think I’ll miss the community meal after Lent.

    I know the meals are great.
    Like finding out your pastor has High School Musical…on his ipod.
    AND using the elliptical…like a real man.
    Things like that. :)

    Good soup and good conversation doesn’t have to end with Easter. What about second Lent?

    @Mary – I don’t know what you’re talking about.

    @Keith – hmmmmm. maybe this could turn into a monthly thing? Except, without all the fasting and stuff. Maybe “Lent Lite”?
