This is the third post I’ve written today. The other two were deleted before posting. This is not uncommon.
Maybe you’ve noticed, maybe you haven’t, but I haven’t been posting much in the last couple of weeks. I guess I’ve gotten fuzzy on what my blog is for. I guess when I was a “jr. pastor” it was a great forum for discussion, ideas, and the like. But these days, I have a hard enough time coming up with material for Sunday mornings – this space often feels like a chore.
Since I started my first blog more than six years ago, things have changed. I know that I struggle to even read blog posts that are more than 140 characters long. I understand specific interest blogs, but I’m not sure what mine is about. It seems unfocused, eclectic, and frankly not very interesting – at least to me.
This isn’t a pity party, by any means. Right now, nothing would be more freeing than to rid myself of the blog. But, I have some ideas… I may be going for a complete overhaul and trying something out. But, before I do anything rash, I thought that I might throw out one last conversation idea and see what y’all think…
If you could make any suggestions – regarding this blog – what would you want to see? More text? Less? More pictures? More food? More family? Less of all of those? Would you like more serious book reviews – or stop talking about books completely… whatever you think.
Really – I’m open to ideas.

I am sure you would rather hear from people you pastor
but my two cents…. honestly I love reading it…I think it is a great to stay somewhat connected to you and Jen…you both had a huge impact on my life in many ways…and to hear about your ministry and life is refreshing…you are right on time…I struggle to post pictures on ours…much less read others…. and ours is only really a family kid blog….but you do a great job of keeping it a great length…which makes it possible to read
That is my two cents which I am sure is not helpful…or matters… whatsoever….:).
My suggestion is that you make it about Food. You really love that topic and then you would have a great side hobby. You Pastor all the time, so why not make your blog about your other passion. I know that if I had a blog, it would not be about History.
I’m a big fan of the book reviews – they’ve directed me to some great reads in the past year.
My vote is for food posts too–recipes and pictures. I like seeing what real people are cooking!
I am with Dan and vote for the food. I liked your tie-in to Chef Achatz on Sunday. There was a great article on him on 2/15 in the Chicago Tribune. I did not know he struggled with stage 4 cancer and has no taste in his tongue today. A great tribute to not giving up. Here is the link if you missed it. http://tinyurl.com/48khmc5 . Personally I like the unfocused, eclectic part of your blog. I think it is more interesting and don’t find it boring Making it monochromatic might be boring.
I agree with Dan in the sense that we all see “pastor Charlie” week in and week out. Why not make your blog about your family and hobbies! I would love more on your family life – how you make marriage work, things you’ve learned through parenting, etc. I also think it’s neat when you post stuff about nature and biking. I would prefer your stories and pictures over text.
I told you I’d respond…. Keep it. I actually look forward to what you have to say on the blog – books (especially the books), food, family, whatever. And I think it’s refreshing that it’s not always the same thing. I bet this reply was no help at all….
Pretty much double what Sarah said. I love your posts on your family, food, and hobbies. Save your deep, spiritual thoughts for Sunday mornings and just keep this light!
I always enjoyed your perspective when you taught at Northwoods. You seem to have a fresh view. Consequently, I enjoy hearing your perspective on Christian topics. And, you book reviews have directed me to some great reads. Keep it up.
