The Renaissance Christian?

Somewhere in the midst of Europe’s Renaissance, an ideal arouse, that a well-rounded individual would have knowledge covering a wide range of disciplines. The embodiment of this idea can be found in Leonardo da Vinci, who became famous for his proficiency in art, science, mathematics, botany, writing and inventing, just to name a few of his varied interests. This kind of person, became known as a polymath, or in the more popular vernacular, a Renaissance man.

Our culture is quite different from the Renaissance ideal. Specialization is the name of the game today. We expect engineers to stick to designing things and we expect chefs to just prepare good food. We expect scientists to care only for scientific stuff and for poets to only read, write and perform beautiful arrangements of words. And we expect the clergy to stick to ancient texts and “spiritual stuff.”

But what if there is spirituality in everything? What if eating good food, enjoying a beautiful day, drinking a great beer, going to a concert with friends, and getting caught up in the beauty of an excellent novel are all spiritual acts? What if everything is spiritual?

About the Author

But seriously, I’m no Leonardo. I’m just an average guy who lives in the Midwest trying my best to be a good husband, father of 4 boys, and leader of a small church. But I have lots of interests. So, this is the place where I explore those interests, where I poke and prod and wonder about the spirituality of everything.
